We all love Jose Ramón! Second part.

In left the first part in the year 1974, just when he started his collaboration with José Luis García Sánchez y Miguel Ángel Pacheco and one year before he appeared on Spanish homes TVs.

I continue with that same year, in which he produce two short films for TVE, “Pablito” a Picasso tribute and “El hombrecillos de gris” (The men in grey), this last one based on the tale with the same name from Fernando Alonso.

That year appears on TVE the show “Un globo, dos globos, tres globos” (One balloon, two balloons, three balloons) dedicated to children and youth audience, and it will be by 1975, when José Ramón, with Miguel Angel Pacheco, takes part of the show, illustrating a story at the same time it was told.
It is then when he illustrates the Fernando Alonso’s tales “La estatua y el jardincito” (The statue and the little garden, 1975) and “La estatua y los niños” (The statue and the children, 1976) and the Lolo Ricos’s “El Mausito” (The Mausito, 1975)

In 1976 he devise, with José Luis García Sánchez, Miguel Ángel Pacheco and Lolo Rico de Alba, the marvelous collection “El Aprendiz de brujo” (The sorcerer’s apprentice). Curiously the collection was published in two different versions, the first one with four volumes with Lolo Rico’s stories, and the second one and more comprehensive with texts by Jose Luis composed by twelve volumes, three about cinema, three about games, three about circus and three about theatre. Without doubt, the more remarkable ones, without devalue to the other ones, are the dedicated to cinema, as in hose ones we can appreciate the Jose Ramón fascination for that world. Whit this work he got the 1978 Lazarillo Prize to the best Spanish illustrator, and was nominated for the international prize Hans Christian Andersen.

A year later he illustrates another book for the “Yo soy” collection, “Soy un estadio” (I´m a stadium) and opened the short movie which script wrote with Fernando Alonso “La penúltima hoja de Otoño” (Autumn’s penultimate leaf).

PSOE counts on him in this period for their posters and advertising, as the pamphlet from 1978 “1978: Una constitución para el pueblo” (1978: A constitution for the people), what increases his popularity. That year he illustrates for the French publishing Bayard Presse the Isabelle Vermeil cute tale “La petite sorciere” (The little witch)

Besides, he gets involved again in a new project with José Luis García Sánchez y Miguel Ángel Pacheco, a collection started by the mouse Camembert, “Las 100 y una actividades juegos, inventos y aventuras de Camembert”.  This collection, from 1978, it’s in four volumes, and would gave a cause for to the later collection from 1980 “Las aventuras del ratón Camembert” (Camembert the mouse adventures) which was made up of ten volumes, including the previous ones with different titles and six more.

In 1979, in Cruz Delgado studios, ends the filming of the long movie “El desván de la fantasía” (The fantasy loft), based on “El aprendiz de brujo” books collection. This movie was never show in theaters, but TVE bought the rights to broadcast it, in 1981, as a 10 episodes serie on the Saturday morning show “Sabadabada”. The impact was so huge, that even now lot of people keeps singing the song composed by Antonio Areta: “Sube que sube, sube al desván, sube al desván de la fantasía…”. (Go up and go up, go up to the loft, go up to the fantasy loft…). Also, the opening from the show was done with fragments from the film.

It was in this show, Sabadabada (it changed the name to Dabadabada when started to be broadcasted on Thursday afternoon until his end in July 1984), where he made his illustrator host debut, accompanied by Mayra Gómez Kemp o Sonia Martínez, leaving open-mouthed to all the children around the country with his high speed drawing skill, at the same time that delighted the with his tales related with what he was illustrating. His show participation included the sets.

His work, make him easier to be able to dedicate to one of his dreams, to paint part of cinema history, in a collection composed by 104 paintings, each one of them inspired on a movie, and 20 actors portraits, named “La gran aventura del cine” (The cinema great adventure), that was finished in 1982. With all this material, he carries out a travelling exhibition and published a book. In 1984, the illustrator and animator Pablo Nuñez, produced and directed a short movie, “La gran aventura del cine: Los monstruos” (The cinema great adventure: The monsters) with panoramic from the artworks of this collection related with that subject.

From 1982 are also his drawings for the books from Lolo Rico “Angelita la ballena pequeñita” (Angelita the little whale) and Isidro Cirero “El estatuto de Cantabria para los niños” (Cantabria statute for children).
The TV show “El Kiosko” (The Bandstand), opened in 1984. It was hosted by Verónica Mengod and the pupet Pepe Soplillo (Pepe Carabias), but one of the sections was with Jose Ramón Sánchez doing the same work than in Sabadabada. The opening cartoons from the show opening were also made by him. This show ended in 1987, and with it, the Jose Ramon marvelous explanations.

Since then he devoted him to his successful and fascinating painter facet, and to very personal projects he continues with, although from time to time we could see his work in some projects for children like “El secreto del lobo” ( The secret of the wolf, Fernando Alonso, 1987), “Minimals” (1988) a book enclosed to a sea monkeys set, “El reino de la Geometría” (The Geomettry Kingdom, Alma Flor Ada, 1993), the collection “Cuentos Clásicos” (Classics Tales, adapted by Aurora Diaz Plaja, 1994) and “La edad de la aventura” (The adventure age, José María Medino, 1995).

 

And here finish my little tribute to this brilliant man.

Juan Bauty, the illustrator dream.

First thing I saw and dazzled me from Juan Bauty was his avatar, a colorful portrait with a 50’s or 60’s style. So when I could have a look to his other artworks, I just confirm my first impression. :)

Juan Bauty was born in Barcelona in 1974, but he moved to Zaragoza, his actual city, in 1980. 

Since very little he picked his markers, and he didn’t dropped them until them couldn´t paint even helped with some alcohol drops. What really touched him as a child were the Brian Froud concept works for Jim Henson Movies “Dark Cristal” (1982) and “Labyrinth” (1986).

In 1994 he got the Graphic Design Fine Arts degree at the Zaragoza Applied Arts School. His mother used to tell hi: “Spielberg is not going to come to your room to give you a job”, so he took from that and started making a living collaborating between 1992 and 1995 with a few comics and fanzines like “La Noche del Caiman” (“Caiman Night” from wich he was also his foundator)and “Suburbio” (“Suburb”) and publishing from 1999 in the humor magazine “Mala Impresion” (“Bad Impression”).

In the year 2000 he decided to get into the Graphic Design business, and today still doing some commissions, like the lovely menu for “La Republicana” restaurant.

At least, in 2009 he illustrates his first book, “El vuelo de las luciérnagas” (“The Glowworms Flight”) from Ana Alcolea. Since then he could dedicated to what he really wanted to, ¡be an illustrator! :D

 

So he has done the drawings for some other books, “Máziel Spück y el Misterio del Cuadro" (“Maziel Spück and the Painting Mystery” 2009, Pepe Serrano), the 2010 edition from “La Chica del Átomo Dorado" (“The Girl in the Golden Atom” Ray Cummings) y de “Leyendas” (“Legends”) from Gustavo A. Bécquer.

Apart from that we could see his artwork in the cover of the number 289 of the cultural supplement “Artes & Letras” from “El Heraldo de Aragon” newspaper.

  

I want to particularly emphasize his participation, with some other illustrators, in the charity book “Ilustrando que es gerundio”, which benefits will go donated in full to the Spanish Federation of Rare Diseases (FEDER). It can be purchased for less than 18 Euros at the Blurb shop.

He delight us continually experimenting and creating lots of really pleasant characters, from which I feel particularly curious about his original Lim, Lum and Lem and what his imagination will do with them. :D

Juan Carlos Eguillor, Pop imagination for big ones and kiddies. :D

It´s been 30 years ago, that the mother of the house where I live, at the age of 6, started to cut out and keep the “Cuentos de la abuelita” (Granny tales) that were published in the children magazine “Pequeño Pais” (Small Country). So, these marvelous cartoons that fascinated her so much, full of color nad completely different to the other ones, were done by Juan Carlos Eguillor.

I want to pay a tribute to him with part of his artwork, so you can discover it or know about it in a deeper way. :)

Juan Carlos Eguillor Uribarri was born in San Sebastian the 15 of August of 1947, but he really grew up in Bilbao. He started Law studies and left them by Journalism, but his interest for drawings and arts in general was so huge, that soon he drops out of university to get involved in what he really loved. So much creativity had to explode from somewhere.

In 1968 he published weekly in the newspaper “El correo Español – El pueblo Vasco” his first cartoon, with Mari Aguirre as the main character in an unrecognizable Bilbao.

 

Mari Aguirre stars in lots of cartoons since, but she was not her unique heroine, he also created Tartarela who appeared in “Nuevos Fotogramas” magazine, and Mari España, Miss Martiartu, etc…

“Las aventuras de Sandalia Upon-Avon” (Sandalia Upon-Avon adventures) a very Pop story with lots of singers of those days and of course José María Iñigo (a very famous Spanish musical journalist), are published weekly From November 1969 till April 1970 in Mundo Joven magazine. From May to June of the same year, also in Mundo Joven, publish “Que camp era mi madre” (How camp my mother was), a comic in Horrid-Vissiooon, as we can read in the first page.

In Triunfo magazine he also published a few cartoons in some of which appears his lately famous “granny”.

But his first children illustrations (at least the first ones I´ve found) are the ones included in one of the Sound Books Pala, from 1973, “Mendruguete y Cuatronombres – Susana la de la sopa” (Mendruguete and Fournames – Susana of the soup). I have to emphasize that the titles from the covers are illustrations from Ivan Zulueta, what I found very curious and interesting.

With a few friends creates in 1979 a fanzine called “Euskadi Sioux, el terror de lo cotidiano” (Euskadi Sioux, everyday terror), that just last seven issues. Among the comic strips that appeared on them, I stress the funny Grease parody, "Koipe.Euskal Musikal", included on the second issue.

A few stories from Bernardo Atxaga were adorned with his prodigious hands, “Aventuras de Nikolasa” (Nikolasa adventures) and “Ratmunxo detective. Más aventuras de Nikolasa” (Detective Ratmunxo. More Nikolasa adventures) both from 1980, and “Chuck Aranberri baten etxean” (Chuck Aranberin goes to the dentist) from 1982.

In 1981 he illustrates “El Castillo de last tres murallas” (Three walls castle) from Carmen Martín Gaite and in December of that year appears the weekly children magazine “Pequeño Pais”, and Eguillor will join it on the second issue illustrating the covers with very popular Spanish singers cutouts, and since the sixth issue with “Los Cuentos de la Abuelita” (Granny stories). The fist one was called “Dorito y su abuelita” (Dorito and his granny), the second one “Abuelita” (Granny), and the third one received the definitive name that was altered sometimes. :D

 

He illustrates in 1982 a collection of ten stories by Lolo Rico, “Dola Dola Tiralabola” based on the same named very famous radio program also created by Lolo Rico, from which Eguillor designed in 1978  the spectacular cover for “Los amigos de Dola” (Dola’s friends) LP, that included the program songs. His collaboration with her wouldn´t end yet, and that same year he make the drwings for “Ramon Ge Te”.

Also in 1982 designs and illustrates “Agenda para todos los dias” (Everyday Diary), a pretty diary that includes songs, riddles and some historical events, and the National Prize of Children Illustration of 1983 goes to him. Some other works wroten and illustrated by him are “El escarabajo y la Luna” ( The bettle and the moon, 1984), “La ciudad de la lluvia” (Rain city, 1984) that was selected in the 2000 as one of the 100 best works of Spanish children literature of the XX century, and “Operación Yogur” (Yoghurt Operation, 1997).

With Carmen Santonja cooperated giving expression to some of her stories “La malvada Infantita y otros cuentos” (The wicked little Infant and other stories, 1986), “La sirena de la fábrica” (The Mermaid from the factory, 1989), and one of his most recent works, the sound book from 2001 “La boutique Fantasque” from Respighni and Rossini. Also, as she was one of the members of “Vainica Doble” (a Spanish band), who Eguillor portrayed in "Las Aventuras de Sandalia Upon-Avon", she commissioned him the cover for their album “Navidad” (Christmas, 2001).

 

In 1988 he brilliantly illustrated the Spanish version of Graham Dustan Martin books “Doneval” and “Favila” and Oscar Wilde’s “El joven Rey y otros cuentos” (The Young King and other Stories)

His weekly publications with the winged pigs “Potolos” in Pequeño Pais started in 1988.

But someone with so many interests and imagination could not be limited to drawings in papers.

He was scriptwriter, cinema director and he even experimented with video and computer animation.

From his videoart works I have to mention “Bilbao la Muerte”  (Bilbao the death) from 1982 and “Menina” from 1986.

He collaborated with his ideas and scripts in the children tv program from Saturday morning in the early 70’s “Hoy tambien es fiesta” (Today is also a party) along with Pedro übeda and Carlos Arias. He strongly cooperated with Gurruchaga, devising the stage design for the concerts with La Orquesta Mondragón, as well as the openings, set designs and even scrips for his tv programs “Viaje con nosotros”, the deliberately uncouth New Year’s Eve tv program “La última cena del 88” (Last supper from 88), both from 1988 or “El huevo de Colon” (Columbus’ egg, 1992).

And I left lots of his works pending, something obvious with such a versatile and prolific person. 

With no doubt he left us a wonderful legacy from which we can see part of until the 28 of January of 2012 in Sala Koldo Mitxelena in San Sebastián. Press in the picture below for more info:
